I’ve been hurt, trampled on, tested and pulled in every direction. Though I often question why, I always come back to one simple thing; every painful trial, each difficult person and experience is guiding me towards the person I am meant to become. I am a work in progress. I am in permanent beta. And I am grateful for it all.

There is nothing more important than my friendships. They are my chosen family. They don’t have to be in my life. They choose to be. And I them. Everyday I am grateful for their company, input, laughter, advice and wisdom.

A few months ago I made the tough decision to leave my big job and start over in London. I was exhausted, depleted and uninspired. So I decided to do something about it.  I followed my bliss. And I knew that meant being in my favorite city, London. Since then, I have been busy curating the life of my dreams on every single level; a new and exciting job, enriching friendships, traveling, reading, writing a new book, taking courses on subjects I have always wanted to know more about. I’m also getting my soul and psyche ready for a truly healthy mate to come in. For a while I wasn’t sure I’d ever want to go back to work, the freedom so liberating I couldn’t imagine a time again where I’d be constrained in the way that I was. However, in the past few weeks I have started getting restless, yearning to get back to what I do best; making television. All this nourishment I have given myself has filled the cup back up again. Aside from feeling great and excited to start each new day, this is perhaps the best signpost of all, that I have done exactly the right thing. I’ve stopped to smell the roses. I have something to give again. I thank the universe every day for giving me the opportunity and the courage to do so. Life is amazing.

I really love my friends. Like… LOVE. And I so appreciate their company and laughter and shared adventures. It’s taken a long time to find my tribe. But I did. Here’s to painting in Italy and eating great food at our villa when we’re 80, girls.

Post MTV/NYC craziness, I am learning to stop and smell the roses. I am learning to give myself permission to slow down, linger just for the pure pleasure of it, and cultivate, I mean REALLY cultivate my friendships. Finding a work/life balance is still difficult for me - I feel guilty if I’m not achieving something most of the time, but I’m learning.

Today I gave myself permission to nap. To relax. To not answer work emails. To let my mind wander. Quietly. With no distractions. Sometimes I felt guilty. Other times I felt perfectly entitled. But I did it. I needed it. I honored myself.

"It’s The Little Things" Experiment. Wherein the author takes stock of the tiny pleasantries of daily life. It’s those - not the tentpole moments - that get us through life. Day 1 - grilled cheese sandwiches.

Sunday… Grateful for it all. My new tranquil abode in Topanga Canyon after 3 rag tag, ruff n’ tumble years in NYC. To be nestled in and amongst animals, trees, flowers and hiking trails is a feeling like no other. I did this. I made this happen when I needed it most. A great reminder that we are capable of carving out the life we envision. Happy Sunday everyone.

March to your own drummer.  There really aren’t rules to this thing called life. It’s what YOU make it. It’s paying attention to who you are and living by that while still being open and flexible to your own evolution unfolding in the most unexpected and delightful ways. Dream big and loud and then exhibit unabashed follow through. Live with integrity and authenticity. And make your own rules along the way.

Sunday mornings - perfect Sunday mornings. The only time I stay still for a moment. Coffee cups and newspapers, magazines and candles - the expensive kind, burning and filling my home with the loveliest of scents. Breathing, stopping, nothing rushed. This is where I treat myself to simply stopping. And then I am ready for the week again.

THE ACCIDENTAL EXECUTIVE

"WHERE PUNK ROCK MEETS THE BOARD ROOM" - THE MUSINGS OF A QUIRKY STORYTELLER TURNED MTV EXECUTIVE" How exactly did I become The Accidental Executive? After years of thinking I was destined to live in Hollywood for the rest of my working life - after all where else does one go to build and sustain a career in entertainment? - MTV called the summer of 2010 and promptly whisked me away to NYC to help create new shows for the network. Excited to exercise my impending Viacom muscles, one thing plagued me… After years of the freelance life writing/directing/producing on my own free-spirited terms, I pondered the idea of balancing corporate life for the first time in my career with the quirky, eccentric creative that is me. After all, who is gonna take the girl with the weird hats, metallic high tops and violent jewelry seriously in the board room? In short, could I still be me? Turns out I can. And while oddities like my silver hammer necklace and seven tattoos ensconced on body parts that refuse to be concealed are often the topic of conversation at the top of a meeting, it’s my work, integrity and positive attitude that help mitigate my left-of-centre presence. As it should be. And I thank my lucky stars every day I work with and for people who live by that philosophy. Or at least allow me to. Others aren’t so lucky… With that said, this blog is for like-minded, eccentric career girls and guys who yearn to balance living their own lives out loud just as they did before the board room… before the budget meetings… before the corner office. Or whatever environment they find themselves in that threatens to pull apart the fabric of who they truly are. This is more than just the ramblings of a fashion-obsessed tv exec. In and amongst the clothes and the models, the bags and objet d’arts are my simple and honest musings about living a truly authentic existence. Without it, nothing else matters. This is that life as I see it.
